As most Search Engine Marketing companies will tell you, there are many different variables that can affect the performance of a website in the search engines. Most are trying to get top position in the results pages, but only a few manage this. Some of the most effective tactics for getting your website in prominent positions is adding unique and relevant content on a daily basis. Most webmasters and administrators just don't have the time to add news releases, or articles to websites as they are not given the significance that they deserve. Content, in the eyes of Google, is king, and once you start feeding content to Google, you can find very quickly that pages start to get indexed quicker and spiders tend to crawl the site more often. Building links is another huge method for getting the search engine to view your site as important, but obtaining the right ones is imperative. They must relevant, and from trusted sources. If you acquire links from unrelated, spammy looking sites, the chances are that you will be penalised for your actions and have to re-build trust again. However, one of the areas that should to be looked at before any of the above is website domain name registration and web hosting. A catchy domain with keyword rich text can be hugely beneficial to Google rankings as they can give greater relevance to a keyword. So, if your website is selling widgets, and you want to be listed highly for the term widgets, it would be ideal to get the url widgets.co.uk or .com , or whatever prefix you prefer. Hosting also has a huge say in what placement you get. If you are a UK company and you host in the UK, the chances are you will get high placements in the UK search engines. To make matters even more complicated, websites that are on dedicated servers tend to have the advantage over shared server hosting as there isn't that risk of sharing space with potentially spammy or dodgy websites. As you can see there are many things to consider when optimising for better positions, and for better Internet Marketing, it is best sticking to the above for top rankings.
