The Promotional Pens on Your Desk

OK, come on and humor me - do this little experiment it won't take much of your time and could be an eye opener. Take a count of all the promotional pens in your office and all of the offices in your immediate area. While you are counting, take note of how many of those are promotional pens of one kind or another. Were you surprised? Most of the time this little experiment indicates that people are either hoarders or just really, really love to collect pens.

Most offices are loaded with plastic promotional pens on the desk, pens at the work table, pens in all of the drawers, pens in briefcases etc. This is often true about homes as well. If you conducted the same experiment at your home, you would be surprised how many pens your family is hoarding. In this experiment, were you surprised at just how many of the pens were promotional pens? This says something doesn't it.

Now, let's add another little test. In this test you need to think back about how many times during the day you had a pen in your hand. Another version of this test is to keep track of how many pens you saw other people using. This may be overkill but, people use pens a lot and they have a lot of them because there is never a pen around when you need it.

Now, let's take the data you have collected and think about it in terms of what promotional item you should give away. Does the promotional pen jump to the forefront? It ought to. You have been confirming how many pens people have and how often people use them. You should want to jump on the bandwagon and put your name and logo on pens sitting on your customers desks, in their briefcases, and in their pockets.

Just think about the possibility of having your name, logo and company contact information on all of those desks. WOW! What a fantastic form of low cost advertising! What is even better is that even though tthe person who received the pen is not using it, they may be letting someone else use it and that new person is reading your name. The promotional pen is the item that just keeps on sharing and sharing information.

Now think about asking your customers if you can supply them with a container full of your pens for them to give to their customers. These can be kept at the reception desk or at the cashier station. They can even be left in waiting rooms for people to take with them. You might be able to work out a collaborative agreement with some of your better customers to display and distribute their promotional pens in trade of them distributing yours. A win- win situation for everyone.
