Fashion Industry and Work

The services of fashion stylists are most of the time employed by daily newspapers, fashion magazines and advertising agencies. These people are required to dress up the various fashion models for photo shoots. The major chunk of the job involves planning about clothes that would look good on each model. They also need to decide about the place to buy or hire their dresses and accessories and actually dressing up these models which all depend on the budget. Dilemmas plaguing the modern fashion and modelling industry are many in number. One may blame the advertisements in the fashion industry for many of society's problems with regard to over weight problems and eating disorders. There are a lot many individuals in the world who are not endowed with the ideal body shapes or features. The highly forceful advertising campaigns waged by various fashion houses and companies, portray beautiful and skinny fashion models and muscle men. All these are bound to create the illusion that this kind of body is the perfect body type and everyone should take efforts or strive to look exactly this way. This will surely put a great deal of stress on people who strive and try to look that way. These cases of advertisements have been yielding enormous impact on the youth of the present day as many of them have started appearing in the pages of youth magazines.

Another grave problem faced by the fashion industry is the extreme body forms of the models as a majority of these catwalk models are dangerously skinny in their appearances. It has been known that some of them even suffer from malnourishment. The young aspirants, upon seeing these outrageously skinny models, may set these people as the benchmarks and might become obsessed with the looks. In order to look like them, they may go to any extent and they develop some kind of eating disorders. All these are problems that are found just on the surface of the fashion and modelling industry. Underneath all these aspects is the issue of sweatshops that make use of child labour. In search of a highly cheap and exploitable labour base, many multinational fashion houses or companies expand to the less developed or developing countries in different parts of the world. By doing this way, they will be able to hire young children to work for very long and arduous hours by giving them very low wages. This is especially so because many of these children are so desperate for a few rupees. To add to the woes, many of the less fortunate people in these countries have no proper laws in place to protect these children from being exploited in this way by multinational organizations. Also, these bond-laboured children do not have any ways or means by which they can exert pressure for getting better wages and better working conditions. Since they just want to continue making the paltry amount of money they are given now, they have to simply tolerate the inexorable sad conditions they are put into.
