Graphic t-shirts were born in the 70s and 80s when large fashion companies began putting over-sized logos on t-shirts. This grew into a trend and in the 90s, became a medium for people to express their opinions and views. The aim of manufacturers was to convey a clear message in an aesthetic and attractive way. Today, now that the technology used to design these t-shirts has become so widely available and inexpensive, the process has become much more accessible to many companies.
The majority of women will probably have some graphic t-shirts hidden away at the back of their wardrobe. They probably think about wearing them in summer, but then think again, as they feel too old or uncool for these high-school classics. However, these items are great for both men and women of all ages, it's all about how you wear them.
The printed tee is such a versatile piece of clothing; it comes in a multitude of shapes and colours and it can be teamed with almost anything! They are great for a lazy day or a walk in the park paired with casual jeans and a cardigan or can be jazzed up with jewellery for going out for dinner or to the cinema. Embellished t-shirts, usually decorated with sequins, different materials or metal, also have that extra something special to dress up any outfit.
Wearing the tees under blazers is a style adopted from Kate Moss herself, and one which instantly dresses up any jeans and t-shirt outfit. Other celebrities have also worn them with the classic denim skirt and cowboy boots combination for a stylish yet casual look.
As for colours, they are great for adding a splash of colour that may not appear anywhere else in your outfit. Or, if you prefer your items to match, coordinate the colour on the graphic logo with the colour of your shoes, handbag or even accessories for a subtle change. As a general rule, the more decorative and colourful the printed tee is, the simpler and more uncomplicated the other pieces in the outfit should be. For example if you have a really wild, bold graphic t-shirt, it's best not to wear this with your brightest cardigan or pair of jeans.
Men also look great in graphic tees, especially when worn under an open shirt. Some male celebrities have been seen teaming their graphic t-shirts with a short scarf. A great look, but be sure that the scarf doesn't take the focus away from the printed tee.
