With today's competitive business world, every business needs some form of printed marketing pieces that will carefully present their products and services. This can include one or a mix of the following: business cards, labels, catalogs, brochures, newsletters, letterhead, postcards, posters, manuals, presentation folders, stationery and many more.

Some businesses take advantage of the availability of desktop programs and software that allows them to create a material easily with the use of templates. Although you can always do this, you need to resist the impulse to do it because it won't give you the unique and outstanding appearance that you aim for. Remember that appearance is everything in marketing, and as much as possible you need to look as professional as you are.

If you want to achieve a professional look and give a good face to your business, here's what you need to do:

• Create marketing pieces that have a consistent look. From your business cards to your brochures and presentation folders, all these pieces should look identical and planned. When you put them together, they should look like they came from one business. In doing so, people will get familiar with you easily.

• Make sure your materials look and feel personal. This means that one look you're your business card or your postcard and your customers and prospects should already feel comfortable and familiar to you. This will help gain the trust of your customers and encourage them to stay loyal to your business.

• Use high quality photos in your materials. Photos help a lot in making your materials look eye-catching and compelling. A professionally done photo will surely set your business apart from your competitions. This will show your customers and prospects that you are a credible business. Low quality photos will only affect your image of professionalism, so be sure to invest in high resolution photos.

• Invest in high quality and professionally designed logo and stationery. Once you have your logo and custom stationery use it in all your communication materials and don't change it for at least ten years. If you don't have your logo and stationery yet, it would be best to hire a professional artist to help you with the design. The artist will ensure that your logo and stationery reflect your corporate identity and give you a professional look. What they will create will definitely be more attractive and compelling than what you expect you can do.

• Understand the principles of graphic design. Although getting a good understanding of graphic design will take a lifetime's work, you can always get some readings to help you get an overview of the work. To help get started, here are some of the important principles of graphic design:

o Stick with simplicity. It's vital that you create a simple design that won't confuse the readers.

o Put enough white space in your materials. Crowding the layout with too much details and images will only make them look confusing and incomprehensible. White space will make sure your material is readable and easy to understand.

o As much as possible stick with the standard formats of materials. This will ensure easy safekeeping and, of course, lesser printing cost.

o Put captions in your photos. This will help people understand your message better.
