Print your brochures with a wide range of colors and visually appealing color schemes. Heavier weight and coated paper make the colors look more appealing and studies have shown the customers respond to those types of prints, and even better to brochures that are coloring rich and color scheme friendly.
Try to remember a brochure that you have received or seen before. What was it about the brochure that caught your eye specifically? Do your best to incorporate what it was that made you want to look at the brochure into your own designs.
Glossy paper is almost always a better option than plain paper. I cannot remember the last time that I saw a brochure that was printed on plain paper.
Color resolution is a key factor in the customers decision of whether to be interested in reading the brochure, or throw it away. There are extremely high resolution options to use if necessary, but a more cost effective and overall better option might be, print with a high quality but not unnecessarily high resolution number. Research the common resolution of photographs in magazines to get a better idea of what resolution is the best option.
Paper sizes are also very important. When I receive a brochure in the mail, large always gets my attention. The drawback about that is the potential customer will think it is a product delivery and be disappointed when he or she finds out it is only a brochure. The annoyance triggers me to throw away brochures in disgust. I would choose a large size brochure in width and length, but not thick enough to be perceived as a package.
Border options are a very important aspect of the brochure itself. Borders present a very inviting visual atmosphere to the reader. Make sure it looks good to a third party, as your opinion may be skewed from looking at the design you made for too long.
Font choice is also very important to get right. You must find a font size and design which will mesh with the color scheme and overall size of the brochure, as well as the quantity of text needed in the brochure.
There are also many templates for brochures that may fit your needs already, if you are not a highly skilled brochure creationist.
